Amsterdam is home to over 200 different nationalities and is becoming a multicultural society accommodating a host of communities of different origin.

One unmistakable feature of Amsterdam is its canals. Some 160 of these waterways crisscross the city centre and its surroundings, dividing it into approximately 90 mini islands. This network of islands is joined together by a vast number of bridges, totally over 1,000. While most of its canals are suitable only for barges and pleasure craft, some waterways, for example, the North Holland Canal , are large enough to accommodate ocean going vessels.

Getting in Amsterdam
Amsterdam's airport, Schiphol, is located approximately 18 km from the centre of the city. From Schiphol Airport , it takes approximately 40 minutes to reach the centre of Amsterdam by taxi. There is also a very regular train service from the airport to Centraal Station, with trains leaving every 15 minutes.
Getting around in Amsterdam
Amsterdam is serviced by an excellent public transport system - the starting point being the Centraal Station. From here, trains, buses and metro lines converge. It is not necessary to purchase separate tickets for each mode of transport, instead tickets are issued that are valid inside specific zones of the city, regardless of whether you take a bus, train or the metro. Travelling around the city centre is best done by tram, while buses are a better option if you wish to travel beyond the centre of the city. It is not advisable to travel by car in the city as free parking does not exist anywhere within the Canal Zone. Weather permitting, perhaps the best way to get around the city is by bicycle. Cycling is actively encouraged in Amsterdam , but be sure to buy a lock if you intend to cycle in the city.
Canals
You should see the city from a barge on the canals. The views from the water are very impressive. Canal tours lasting about 60 minutes are available and take you around the city and through the harbour. For the more energetic, a canal bike can be hired from one of several points through the city and you choose your own route.
Museums
The Rijksmuseum is the home of many of Holland 's old masters. Works from Rembrandt, Vermeer, Hals and Steen adorn the walls of the country's premier art museum.

The Van Gogh Museum contains about 200 of the painter's finest works, including Cottages, The Potato Eaters and Head of a Woman.

The Anne Frank Museum is the former hiding place of the world-famous diarist and her family during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam. Her original diary is among the articles on display.
